“It may appear odd for a pianist of my generation to choose to make a recording of the piano music of César Franck, but this should not be viewed as a wish to surprise the public or arouse its curiosity. This project was stimulated above all by a desire to revive a certain tradition, a French tradition to be sure, but also one that was once current far beyond our frontiers, to judge by the repertory of many great pianists of the past. My personal discovery of César Franck dates from the age of thirteen, when I practised Prélude, choral et fugue, immediately followed by the Sonata and the Quintet, which became two of the first chamber works I regularly played. As a result, this music became familiar to me, and I came to realise in my concerts that it not only spoke very directly to the younger generations who were meeting it for the first time, but above all had the capacity of rousing older music-lovers to happy and intense recollections of a childhood gently bathed in the universe of Franck and his disciples.” Bertrand Chamayou - Excerpts from the inside notes
