Marie-Nicole Lemieux

Marie-Nicole Lemieux

Classical - Contralto

In 2000, Marie-Nicole Lemieux became the first Canadian to win the Premier Prix de la Reine Fabiola and the Special Prize for Lieder at the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition in Belgium. Since then she has sung Beethoven, Berlioz, Debussy, Gluck, Handel, Haydn, Honegger, Koechlin, Mahler, Monteverdi, Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Vivaldi, and Wagner, and many great works in the French repertoire.

She now appears in the world’s leading venues, including the Berlin, Vienna and Munich State Operas, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées (Paris), the Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), La Monnaie (Brussels) and Covent Garden (London), under the direction of such conductors as Antonio Pappano, Kurt Masur, Paavo Järvi, Daniele Gatti, Bernard Labadie, Michel Plasson, Kent Nagano, Yoav Talmi, Fabien Gabel, Alan Curtis, and Jean-Christophe Spinosi.

Among her most notable recent performances are Mistress Quickly in Falstaff, the title roles in Vivaldi’s Orlando furioso (DVD Naïve) and Handel’s Giulio Cesare, the Verdi Requiem, and Isabella in L’Italiana in Algeri at the Opéra de Lorraine. Marie-Nicole Lemieux has signed an exclusive contract with Naïve, for which she has recorded Vivaldi’s Griselda and Orlando furioso and the recital CD L’Heure exquise (2006), among others. Her solo disc Ne me refuse pas (2010), unanimously praised by the press, won the Grand Prix International of the Académie Charles Cros (category vocal soloist). The duo recital with the soprano Karina Gauvin Streams of Pleasure also enjoyed great international success.

In the spring of 2010 Marie-Nicole Lemieux received an honorary doctorate from the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi; in March 2012, she was appointed Chevalier de l’Ordre de la Pléiade in the Ordre de la Francophonie et du Dialogue des Cultures by the Assemblée Parlementaire de la Francophonie.
